Japan and India May Hold Leaders’ Summit in Assam on July 1 During Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s First Official Visit

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Guwahati, Assam, on July 1 during her first visit to India since taking office. The proposed summit is expected to highlight Japan’s infrastructure assistance in northeastern India and strengthen bilateral relations through reciprocal diplomatic engagement.

New Delhi, June 10: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi may hold a bilateral meeting in Assam on July 1 during Takaichi’s first visit to India since assuming office, according to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Sarma stated that “there is a possibility” that the two leaders will meet in Guwahati, the largest city in Assam. The proposed meeting would take place during Takaichi’s upcoming visit to India under the framework of reciprocal high-level exchanges between the two countries.

Japan has played a significant role in supporting infrastructure development across northeastern India through the provision of low-interest yen-denominated loans. Assam has been at the centre of these development initiatives in the region, which has historically lagged behind the wider Indian subcontinent in terms of rapid economic growth.

If the proposed summit takes place, it would provide Japan with an opportunity to showcase its long-standing development assistance and infrastructure partnerships across northeastern India. The meeting would also underscore the strategic importance of the region in the expanding relationship between the two nations.
